Queens ants are almost always bigger than the workers of that species, most noticeably having bigger gastors, midsections and heads.

Although most queen ants are easily identified, some can look very similar to their worker counterparts. A tell-tale sign of almost any queen ant is they have a raised midsection (because of their wing muscles) with wing scars on the sides of it. Queens usually pull off their wings after their nuptial flight to make it easier to move underground.
